I am researching the HESSON family of Darke Co., Ohio.

Within "The HESSON Story" a genealogical study written in 1979, there is a newspaper clipping entitled, "French Settler History Written by Lois Ann Baker"

Some of the paragraphs are transcribed below which include references to the surname this message is posted to:

"A deed to St. Valbert's Cemetary, Versailles, Ohio, is recorded in French on page 105 of Deed Book No. 1, Darke County, Ohio. Following this deed are recorded documents that are relative to the deeding of the St. Valbert's to the Monsignor. This document was dated March 4, 1863, and was written by Father L. Navarron, Pastor. The priest was asking the trustees to deed the title to th Monsignor. The following gave their approval by signature or oral consent in the presence of witnesses: Jacob NAGEL, Francois BEGIN, Victor PILLIOD, Francois FOUY, Nicolas MARCHAL, P. MATTHIEU, Sebastian DOUTCOURT, Nicols HALLOTTE, Nicolas MARCHAL Jr., Jean Joseph BEGIN, Stanislas PEQUIGNOT, Pierre SABOURIN (SUBLER), J. B. BERGER, Joseph BERGE, J. Jacques DeBROSSE, Jean Pierre BERGE, G. GRILLOT, F. J. MALDINI, Gerard MOUGEVILLE, Simon RICHARD, Francois SOUSSOTE, Joseph BERTIN, Thiebaut DIDIER, Jacques MARCHAL, Alexis MONNIER, J. F. GASSON, Augustin SCHEMITT, Christophe LEMOINE, Joseph FROSSARD, COUCHOT, Jean Francois AUBRY, Zepherlin LIGIER, Anne MARCHANE, Claude ADAM, H. GOUBAUX, Antoni SHOULER, Jacques Theodore CHALOUPE, N. REBOULET, Francis PILLIOD, Francis ROCCO, Xavier VOISARD, and Arey HENRY."

"On page 106 of the same deed book dated March 23, 1839, Nicholas V. MARCHAL conveyed to the trustees of the Roman Catholic Congregation one and one-half acres of land. The indenture was signed by four trustees and two witnesses. The trustees were Phillip MAILLOT, Frederick PEPIOT, Jacque NEPPER and Joseph SCHEMITT."

"St. Valbert's registry as recorded by Father Navarron reveals some interesting facts. The first baptisisms recorded were Margaret, daughter of Nicholas REBOULET and Margaret GOUBAUX; Mary Louisa, daughter of Francis De FLIGNEY and Margaret ADAM on October 17, 1839. On October 20, 1839, Joseph, son of John MANERE and Catharine SMITH, was baptized. Nicolas, son of John BERGE and Christian FRAMM, was christened on October 23, 1839. The christening of Seraphine, daughter of Joseph BERTINE and Appolina WAYNE, was held on October 27, 1839. Marriages recorded were Jacob MARCHALL and Margaret PEQUIGNOT, November 6, 1839; Joseph SMITH and Eugenia PEQUINOT, November 23, 1839; Peter Joseph DeBROSSE and Mary Catherine FOY, February 18, 1841; Nicolas MARCHALL and Mary LACHEY, September 11, 1841; George GRILLOT and Mary PARMENTER, February 28, 1842; Joseph GUILLOZET and Mary Henrietta GRILLOT, June 28, 1842. The funerals recorded were Henry GRILLOT, November 2, 1839, and Joseph PARMENTER, December 26, 1839. Father NAVARRON served this region until 1850 when he was transferred to another parish."

If any of this information helps, please tell me.
