John, Thank you for your reply. Sorry I never got notice of it. I only accidentally came across it. Your website is super. Love the photos. Here is some info on the brother of John [Johann] Jacob Diehm, Jacob Frederic [Friedrich] Diehm. Hope it will help you in your research. I will post the documentation separately, & info I have on John Jacob's descendants.
Cheers,
Chuck Walthall

DIEHM FAMILY OF MIAMI CO KS

Earliest Diehms in America:
Peter Diehm & family of 4 show up on the 1790 census in Reading Boro, Berks, PA. Johannes Adam Diehm d 1802 in Fayette, Fayette, PA. Several Diehms age 64 & 65 were born in PA, so they were also here by 1794-5. By 1860 there were many Diehms (Deihms) in Lancaster, Berks & Philadelphia counties, PA (Pennsylvania Dutch = Deutsch = Germans); NY City & IN. Most came from Baden (a state not a city, today called Baden-Württemberg), one from Baden-Baden (a city) and one from Hess Darmstadt (a city). There are still many Diehms living in the Franconian area of Bavaria & in Baden-Württemberg.

When did our Miami Co Diehms immigrate to KS?

1848?
Jean Nickell, in Family Histories & Stories of Miami County, Kansas (1987), p 149 says: “Fred & his brother, Jacob [Jake] came by boat to America in 1848. The voyage took 58 days.”

1857?
1857 Apr settled in Ks, Miami, Mound (1859 Census KS, Miami, Mound)
1857, 26 May: homestead 1 ¼ mi S of Beagle deeded (FH285).

1858?
1900 Cen says year of immigration for Jacob F. & Mary A. Diehm was 1858; been in US 42 years.
[Does it mean the year of naturalization?]

Did they come through the port of Philadelphia? Or through New Orleans?
Multiple censuses say they came to KS from IL, which suggests they came up the Mississippi from New Orleans rather than overland from PA.
