James,
On my visits to Ireland, I was told that Diggins was not a Kerry name and no county seemed willing to accept responsibility for us. According to Leathanach (The Irish People) there are three possible origins; Clare, Galway, and Offaly and that in Kerry the name may have been changed to Diggin or it may have had an independent origin.
