Plantation site In Va. Closed No Gov. Funding
To all the Diggs/Digges and relations.I don't know if you are aware that part of our family's legacy is being neglected. We moved to Mo. in 2000, and prior to leaving Va. we went to Yorktown to visit Belfield one last time.We had to get special permission at the Yorktown visitor center because they had closed down Belfield due to lack of Gov. funding. The plantation is located on Colonial parkway very near Yorktown. The site itself was over grown ,although the drive into it was still in good condition. However, you could not drive into it because a chain was across the enterance. If you have never heard of this historic site let me tell you briefly that it contains an above ground buial vault of Govenor Edward Digges and his wife that is surrounded by an eight foot wrought iron fence. It also has the foundation of the main house. The grave site is further back in a wooded area and there was trash all over. Apparently it must be a favorite spot for teens to party at. There were beer bottles and cans all over.We must all do something about this tragedy. If anyone has any suggestions please email me,or post a message here at this site.To me it seems history has overlooked our ancient, historical family long enough.
