WATERVILLE -- Emily Diggs Roberts, 102, a resident of Lakewood Continuing Care Center, passed away Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004.
She was born in Farmingdale on Nov. 23, 1901, the daughter of Oscar R. and Lillian (Sampson) Diggs.
She attended schools in Gardiner and graduated from Waterville High School in 1920. In honor of Maine's centennial year and as the Commercial honor student, she recited "Evangeline" at her graduation.
After graduation, she went to work for the People's National Bank. In January 1924, the Federal Trust Co. (now Fleet Bank) was opened and she spent the rest of her career there. She retired as assistant treasurer in 1962.
Emily was an active member of the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church of Waterville, a member of the Maine Mayflower Society, a Past Worthy Patron of the Martha Washington Chapter -- Order of Eastern Star, a charter member and officer of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, in Portland, and a charter member and president of Zonta.
She enjoyed tatting, knitting, crocheting, traveling and caring for others.
Emily was predeceased by her first husband, Wilbur C. Lunt, her second husband, C. Francis Roberts, Jr., brothers Leon J. Diggs, Alvin Orion Diggs, and sister Frances E. Diggs.
Survivors include nieces Ellen Wilson of Quakertown, Pa., and Ellen Bodman of Chapel Hill, N.C., nephews Roscoe Sanborn of Augusta and Robert Diggs of Tucson, Ariz., cousins Arthur Moore of Hallowell, Robert Moore of Augusta and Janis Cross of Hallowell.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, 61 Pleasant St., Waterville, on Thursday March 4, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. with the Revs. Russell Chase and Anna Beech officiating. Burial will be in the Sampson family lot at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner this spring.
