My G.G.Grandfather was Matthew Dignan. He came to the US somewhere between 1860 and 1865. His occupation was a shoe maker. He stayed in the NYC area for about 25 years and then headed out west. He had at least one son Richard Dignan. I also have a John Dignan who was a witness on Richard Dignan
wedding certificate.

Can he be an relation to your Matthew?
