CAPT George Dille was born in Riverstown, Ireland in 1619 and was christened at Waltham Abbey, Essex, in 1621. He became captain of the ship Goodfellow, and transported many Irish people to Boston. He was lost at sea in 1654.
He was the father of John Dille, who was born in 1645 and lived on Staten Island, then became one of the first settlers in Woodbridge, NJ in 1662. The book my folks and I wrote in 1964, The Dille Family, 300 Years in America, is on Teddie Noye's web site.
The commonest variant on Dille is Dilley. A few, including my great grandfather's second wife, changed the spelling to Dillie in about 1870, but that spelling and Dilly are quite unusual.
