All my life I have been asked, "Are you any relation to John Dillinger?" I'm not, but here is some information I got from some Dellinger researchers:

One book I suggest you read if you have some interest in this John is:
"Dillinger, the Untold Story" by G. Russell Girardin with William J.
Helmer, published in 1994 by the Indiana University Press. Girardin was
a young Chicagoan when a chance encounter with Dillinger's lawyer, Louis
Piquet, gave him the idea to tell the true story of the criminal's life
and career in crime. The articles Girardin wrote for the Hearst
newspapers from information supplied by Piquett and his private
investigator, Arthur O'Leary, became the basis for a book that was never
published until 1994.
Excerpted from this book, p. 10....."in the hills of Lorraine lies the
rich wine country of the Moselle Valley, the cradle of the Dillinger
family. Mathias Dillinger left his native France when about twenty
years old and arrived at New Orleans on the eve of the Civil War.
Shortly thereafter, he settled in Indiana and married, and the Dillinger
family combined with Hoosier stock. From that blend came John Wilson
Dillinger, the father of America's greatest desperado."......."John
Herbert was born on June 22, 1903"
