*There is a bit of a mystery concerning the mother of Dora Belle Dingess. Dora is shown as 2 years old in the 1880 Logan Census. When she married Wm. Preston Sansom, on Jan. 03, 1894 in Logan Co., she gave her mother's name in this marriage record as: M. Sidebottom. Dora's two older sisters' marriage records gave their mother as M. Adkins. From the marriage record of Dora's father on Jan. 15, 1874 in Logan Co. we know he married Minerva J. Adkins, age 18, b.Logan Co., dau.of Isaiah & Jane (Tony) Adkins. Although no parents were listed for bride and groom in the record of John W. S. Dingess & bride, Minerva Adkins, she does appear with her parents in the 1860 Logan Co. census as a 4 yr.old child. {Please note Dora's father's full name is JOHN WASHINGTON SAMPSON DINGESS, always called by friends and family: "Samp" Dingess.} Samp Dingess was born abt. 1854 Logan Co. J.W."Samp" Dingess was the son of: Peter C. "Coffee Pete" Dingess, son of John & Chloe (Farley)Dingess. Coffee Pete Dingess found in both the 1850 &'60 census as being born abt.1828 while the Logan Co.1870 & '80 censuses record his birth as abt. 1826. Peter C. "Coffee Pete" married Jane Adams, b.abt. 1830/31 Ky. (prob. Perry Co.Ky.) Her parents were: John Washington Adams & wf., Polly Hall. J.Wash. & Polly married in Perry Co. on Apr.08,1830. John W., s/o Bartholomew & Peggy (Goins)Adams. Polly Hall, wf.of J.Wash. Adams, was the dau. of Revolutionary War Vet. Anthony Hall and his wife, Ruth Butler.
Dora's husband, William Preston "White" Sansom, b.abt.1875 is found in the 1880 Lincoln Co.WV. census with his parents: John Wesley "Wes" Sansom,b.abt.1845. "Wes" Sansom's second wife, Victoria Linville is the mother of W.P."White" Sansom. Many of White Sansom's descendants today do not know his first two names of William Preston. The children who bring family tree charts into my classroon,ALWAYS have him listed as "White" Sansom. This part of his name is derived, no doubt, from his Sansom grandparents, William Sansom, b.c.1807 & Mary "Polly" White,b.c.1815, the d/o Benjamin & Ann (Stewart) White. William Sansom was the son of local pioneer, John Sansom & wife, Elizabeth Davidson.
*I will provide info. on NANCY DINGESS in a separate message. J.R.Hall Logan, WV.
