Everything coming together definitely indicates two Williams, the second appears to have been a son of the first. The soundex records I have yet to put on-line indicate the first William had three sons, William, Seaborn, and Waitman. Trying to trace Miles, soundexes aren't showing who his father may have been. As soon as I can enter all the info into Word; I'll be posting all the NARA research I did this time last year while I was in Washington onto my site. Trying to pin down where Ervin's line traces back, as well. All will be on-line soon. Info I have on the first William was handed down by my Dad; but everything he gave me matches soundex records I've seen, except for when the first William settled in NC and where he came from.
As Dave noted, that is family legend; but I don't see any reason to either discredit it or set it in stone. Only research will tell.
Hoping we can trace the french roots back farther for some solid evidence.
More soon. Still hoping we can meet sometime, if I can ever find the time.
