Melissa, My father (also named Thomas deShong) born in 1890 said that his grandparents spoke French. His grandmother was a Mellot and they were also French. My father ws born in Fulton County, PA. His grandparents spelled their name Dishong but pronounced it without the g
Hisfather was the first of his famil to change the spelling and as a child when we vistied PA, theycontinued to spell and pronounce theie name differently. Only in recent years are we all saying deShong, but still spell in different.
I will look through my files to see if I have any reference to another William. What was his grandparent's names? That might help.
