That's unlikely unless he married a much older woman. The 1920 census has James Edward's mother living with him, her name is Mary and she is 71 years old so born about 1849. This fits with Mary J who was recorded as 31 in 1880. So this indicates that he is probably the son of Avington, I just cannot yet prove it.

Have you traced Avington and/or Mary Jane after 1880? Do you know when Avington died? Mary (if this is the same one) died between 1920 and 1930 in Oklahoma, not sure if it was Alderson or McAlester.
