Re: Dismuke to Desmuke

Hello --

I just recently found out that the
original spelling of my last name
was Dismuke, then Dismukes (dropped in
census) and finally Desmuke.

During my initial genealogical research,
I located an uncle, who told me there
had been some animosity that developed
between his father, William Dismukes and
his siblings. William, born in 1876,
changed the spelling to Desmuke in the
late 1890s.

His father, Andrew Dismuke was from
Gonzales, Texas, and in the 1870 census
for that area, he was living with his
wife, Sealy and baby daughter Myrtle.
After he died somewhere between 1879-80,
Sealy appears in the 1880 census as
Sealy Dismukes (enumerators' ineptness}
Gonzales, Texas.

I have since found quite a few relatives
that are Dismukes and have able to add them
to my family tree.

regards,
Joyce E. Hornbeak
