I realize that I am a couple of years late posting a response, but my Great Great Grandfather was Henry Dismuke (I believe - don't have the records here with me). He too was of African heritage. But the family was from Tennessee and later moved to Kansas City, MO. I will post more information tonight - but also looking for other family members. For example in the 60's there was a relative named Nellievon and one named Lovie (could be nick names) don't have last names but I'm interested in finding relatives to them. Later on - the name was changed to "desmukes." Any information would be helpful. For others, I'm here in DC - so I can research the National Archives for anyone that wants additional information.
