Your GG-Grandfather James Disney was a brother of my GG-Grandmother Amanda Louisa Disney. Their parents (our GGG-grandparents) were Benjamin F. Disney and Rachel Garrison.

This information comes from my G-Grandmother’s Bible, Benjamin’s Civil War Pension folder, Records of The Henry Watson Childrens Aid Society, and U.S. Census records.

1. Benjamin F. Disney b. abt 1818 in Wash DC or MD, d. 25 Mar 1870 Maryland Soldiers’ Home, E. Balto St, Balto, MD. On 22 Jul 1841 at Seamen’s Union Bethel, Balto, MD, he married Rachel Garrison b. abt 1823 in Balto MD, d. abt 9 Aug 1861. (Rachel’s sister was Mary Simpson who lived at 310 S. Collington Ave, Balto, MD in 1897.)

              Children:
       i. Mary Disney b. abt 1842 MD. She married Mr. Gill.
ii. James Disney b. abt 1844 MD. He married Kate Long.
              A. Mary R. Disney b. abt 1868 MD.
              B. James W. Disney b. abt 1872 MD.
              C. Virginia Disney b. abt 1876 MD.
              D. John R. Disney b. abt 1880 MD.
iii. Sarah E. Disney b. abt 1846 MD. She married Mr. League.
iv. Maria J. Disney b. abt 1847 MD.
       v. Emma Disney b. abt 1848 MD. She married Mr. Robey.
vi. William Disney b. abt Apr 1850 MD, a Bricklayer. He married Mary (Mollie) Dudrow b. abt 1852 MD.
              A. Mollie Disney b. 6 Oct 1877 Balto City, MD.
              B. Ada Disney b. 20 Sep 1879 Balto City, MD.
              C. Mabel Marie Disney, b. 10 Feb 1895 Balto City, MD.
vii. Amanda Louisa Disney b. 7 Jan 1855 Balto MD, d. 2 May 1904, 1113 Collington Ave, Balto City, MD. She is buried in Balto Cem, Balto City MD. She was not married, but had a daughter (my G-Grandmother) by COL William Scott Roberts of Centreville, MD.
              A. Laura Virginia Disney-Roberts, b. 10 Nov 1880 Church Hill, Queen Annes Co, MD, d. 29 Apr 1962, Balto City, MD
       viii. Laura Disney b. 1856 MD, d. abt 1870.
ix. Fanny W. Disney, b. 25 Sep 1859 MD. She married Mr. Evans.

Do you happen to know who Benjamin F. Disney’s parents were?
We are probably somehow related to these Snowden Disney’s because their birth and death dates were written in my G-Grandmother’s Bible; I just haven’t been able to find the connection yet:
1. Snowdin Disney – born 10 Aug 1760, died 11 Aug 1811 [This Snowden was married to Rachel Deaver.]
2. Snowdin Disney – born 5 Oct 1802, died 28 May 1869 [His death certificate says 28 May 1889, so someone apparently wrote his death date in the Bible much later and just wrote the wrong year.]

Do you have any information on Fanny Cobalt?
Also written in this Bible is: Fanny Cobalt, Aunt of Benjamin – Sheffield, England.

Did you know that James, along with my G-Grandmother Amanda Louisa, Marie and Laura were put into Foster homes by The Henry Watson Childrens Aid Society?

Remember their mother Rachel died about 9 Aug 1861, and Benjamin F. enlisted for the Civil War in Oct 1861 after his wife’s death. Many children in Baltimore at this time were homeless, and even those who had homes were frequently on the streets begging for food, some were stealing, had very little clothing and shoes, and didn’t go to school. Rather than call these children vagrants and put them in jails, they were taken out to the country to live on farms where they were to be fed, clothed, made to go to school, and also to work on the farm or in the house to earn their keep when they weren’t in school .

“The Children’s Ledger – A Correct List of Country Homes for the Children of The Henry Watson Children’s Aid Society” says James was 16 yrs old by 25 Feb 1862 (which would mean he was born in 1846, while his age on the U.S. Censuses indicates he was born in 1944 and your Civil War Pension file says he was born 17 Mar 1842. He may have said he was older than he actually was in order to enlist). James was sent to live with Wm. L. Godwin, Crumpton, Queen Annes Co, MD on 24 Mar 1862, but it doesn’t say how long he stayed there. Since it appears James was AWOL in Mar 1862, he may have come home, and since he was probably still under 18 yrs old, he was sent to Crumpton probably to work on a farm where he would at least have a place to live and eat.

Maria Jane Disney was also living with Wm L. Godwin in Crumpton, but was returned by or removed from that home on 25 Jul 1862, and then on 25 Aug 1862 she was sent to live with Emanuel Brangh, Emmitsburg, Frederick, MD.

Amanda Louisa was sent on 20 Feb 1862 to live with Chas. T. Solloway, Sudlersville, Queen Annes Co, MD.

Laura Disney was sent on 2 May 1866 to live with Ellen M. Waters, Clarksburg, Montgomery Co, MD; and later on 2 Apr 1870 she was sent to live with Alice P. Gibson, Frederick, Frederick Co, MD. Laura was returned to home 24 May 1870, and died sometime that year.

I’d love to hear from you, and please let me know if you can add any new information to what I have here, especially if you know who Benjamin F. Disney’s parents or siblings are. And if you know anything about Fanny Cobalt.
