You can find information on this line of Ditto's in Robert Shean Riley's book,History of the Ditto families 1700-1996,published in 1996 by McDowell in Utica, KY.
This is William I in Mr. Riley's book and he surmises that this William stayed in MD until at least 1745, when he mortgages a piece of property.
Some of his story of William's children are very speculative, but it does seem that he next pops up in Granville County,NC buying and selling property in 1758. He is on a tax list in 1761 in the "Bare Swamp" district in 1761. He is appointed overseer of a road in Chatham County, NC in 1774, is involved in a land dispute in 1778 again in Chatham County, supplies the Continental Army in 1780, and appears to be getting ready to move as he sells many goods and animals in 1786 in Chatham County.
There are three other Ditto's there at the same time, Shadrach and James who are in the 1772 Chatham County militia, both born before 1755, and Zebulon born 1760 - 1765. I haven't yet figured out the relationships. James is probably a son. Shadrach may be a son or brother to William. Zebulon is either a brother to them or son of Shadrach.
They seem to have chosen different political paths. James is subjected to 4 fold tax in 1780 indicating he was a Tory, also he submits a petition to the governor for a pardon in 1782, he leaves for SC in about 1786, my guess with William in tow. William does not show up in the 1790 census with James, so I presume he died between 1786 and 1790.
Shadrach served in the NC militia in 1780, being a patriot, and Zebulon is certified as a RW soldier for purposes of a pension in 1834. I cannot find a service record on him.
Zebulon is my direct descendent. I can give you more detailed info if you wish to contact me at
