Certainly, the 1850 Blount County Census is a Key census for those looking for surnames who have their roots in Blount County. With only one McClurg family listed for this census, those researchers west of the mississippi, look at this census for McClurg and attempt to modify their genealogy to fit that one listed family.
The personnel at the Archives said that since the field copy was in rough shape by the time the census was completed, that more than likely this copy went to the County. Copies two and three went to the State and Census Bueau in Washington.
I find that any transcribed census and any transcribed census index are subject to many errors in determining surnames. If a transcriber can not decipher the name, they can't index or transcribe it. Therefore, in the census on line are taken from the microfilm as some has the original film on their site, one can only find their subject if and only if they were able to correctly index that surname. I know this is the best we have to work with, but I reccomend that all these indexes and results be a guide as to where to look on the original microfilm for that county, line by line.
Usually a subject missed in any given census doesn't cause much trouble. However, this 1850 Census is a Key census for our Clan. The information it should have contained is lost forever.
