Elizabeth,
You, are a little champion! You found them alright! The Theddlethorpe lot on the 1881 census are mine alright.Thank you!! It made me a lovely birthday present. And I now have proof this is them because the great grandaughter of Hannah Elizabeth (Dobbs) Emmitt, (W.H.), has since sent me other concrete information in the post confirming this.
Incidentally, Hannah Elizabeth Dobbs was not on this same 1881 census list.Though her younger brother (my GGGr)- John Charles Dobbs, was.He was born around 1865 in Theddlethorpe, St Helen, Lincolnshire.
Anyway, eldest child Hannah Elizabeth DOBBS, born 22 June 1862 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, both children of John Dobbs & Rebecca Elizabeth (Constence) DOBBS.
By the time of the 1881 Census Hannah Elizabeth had already moved away and was working on the Harrison's Farm in Lincolnshire. Her future husband also worked on the farm, he was Joseph EMMITT, 20, and a Waggoner Agric Lab. This info was kindly supplied by my indirect but fabulously newfound relative, - W.H, in QLD.
If anyone else is researching 'DOBBS' from any of the same areas as quoted here... eg. Sheffield in Yorkshire, and Theddlethorpe in Lincoln, or maybe a Dobbs from Somercotes, or anyplaces nearby, then please contact me: just click on my name above.Doesn't matter if you haven't figured it all out yet, don't care about all that, just email me, ok!Working together we'll figure out if there's a link.
There is, apparrently, a good gentleman in England, (P.), who is the great grandson of William Dobbs - born about 1878 in Theddlethorpe.William was most likely the baby brother of John C and Hannah E.The three (3) other DOBBS siblings were: Louisa 1868, James 1871, and Ursula 1874. I would like to correspond with (P) or any other descendants of this family to share what knowledge I already know, re: decendants here in Australia and perhaps also to exchange b,m,d information on descendants in the UK or elsewhere.
Another interesting piece of info on the 1881 Census was the sighting of old 'Uncle Frederick', b. in Somercotes about 1849.Frederick was obviously the baby brother of John Dobbs Snr (that's Hannah & John C's Dad).So if it's the same Frederick that we've got over here then he also came out to Australia, that's after John C Dobbs and Hannah E Dobbs/Emmitt emmigrated, we believe.
And while we're talking about all of these Johns';WHY???? why in the name of ... (take your pick), did they keep on repeating each others names. Over and over again, and then, again.Doesn't it make it difficult for us rellies when it comes time to do the research?!!Hmmm, and I bet nobody ever thought of us, the poor researchers, when they were churning out babies and recycling their old names.
PS. Elizabeth, hope you got the email I sent you on the 20th July 2002.Thanks again for your invaluable help and support. It is so appreciated. Please do keep in touch.Let me know about the ups and downs of your research and I will surely bore you with mine.
