Mary Dobbs Brooklyn late 1800s (And "Carman" connection??)

My grandfather was George Armhold. He was born in Baltimore in 1922. On his birth certificate which I have, his mother's name was written as "Mary Carman" or at least something close to Carman. My grandfather printed on there himself the name Dobbs, and always said her name was Dobbs. I have no idea why it said Carman. A middle name? A 2nd marriage? A mistake? Who knows. I haven't been able to find a person that fits the timing by either name in the time period. I know she was Irish, but acccording to the birth certificate she was born in NY.

It's also possible that Mary was part Native American. It is somewhere in the family, but I'm not sure if it was her.

Any clue?
