I hope this doesn't print twice, since I had half a page here all typed and lost it! So to begin again, the copy from Mr. Smythe's book shows the 1850 census and lists Clinton, 18 and Marcellus, 14 living with Solomon 63 and Elizabeth, 63 at that time. It was not uncommon for large families such as this to have some grandchildren living with the grandparents. Mr. Smythe's notes say these boys are either grandchildren or wards, however, if Clinton is 18 here, that makes Elizabeth only 45 or so when he was born, and 49 when Marcellus was born. Since pioneer women began early and often had large families, it is not impossible these were children; however, it is not stated here.
Mr. Smythe quotes from J.Floyd Wine's book "Life Along the Holston' which comes from records and diaries, etc. and has information on Jacob and John Dobkins, etc. It is a shame both are out of print. Mr. Smythe's book is on file in one library in Virginia, but I do not know if they make copies of the myriad hand-drawn maps and the photos, etc. in it. I don't actually know where the liability might lie. There are photos of Alexander's family, and photos that I assume Mr. Smythe took or found of the original Dobkins homesteads in the east, etc. and it is fascinating, including some military records of Jacob and Solomon, Reuben, Evan, and so on.
My line comes through Evan, we believe. We can find his marriage record, and a few of the military ones, but none of his offspring. That record would be priceless to us, and I am hoping that someone can find something on it somewhere. Mr. Smythe's family line is Alexander's and through his (Mr. Smythe's mother) He has included a good deal of history on Alexander and his offspring in his book for that reason and ends the lines with himself (Mr. Smythe) so one might assume him childless?? He does include a listing from the Army (Civil War, I think) listing W.C, (child of Alexander) as A.W.O.L. and then paroled. That and other goodies. But as nearly as I can see, no exact record on Marcellus and Clinton other than that I have sent.
