good morning, in our "family papers" we have a land patent granted to a Matthew Dockery, for purchase 160 acres in Lawrence County, illnois, from the Palestine Land Office, dated 1825. our oral family history has the first 'ancestor' coming to illinois because of a land grant he recieved for military service....but noone remembers which grandfather or which war. we have not yet been able to connect the Dockery name to any known family name of ours. i have found MANY Land grant/patents awarded to this same Matthew Dockery during this same time frame, along the Frontier(a land spectulator? a wheeler-dealer? maybe even the US gov't. settling a debt owed to M. Dockery????).... and there are two Acts of Congress (act #198 and #208) named for a Matthew Dockery, both concern land? it seems?? but gov't. being what it is, i can't make heads nor tails of WHAT exactly these acts of congress actually did??? the county lines of early illinois changed frequently, so it has been difficult determining where the 160 acres plot is located...it may be in a spot that is now richland co., ill.??? anyway, do you think this is the same Matthew Dockery as the one in your family? the surnames in our family in Illinois during this time frame are; Berry, White, Johnston, Robards & Poff. thank you, julie berry Notify Administrator about this message?
