My wife is a descendant of Matthew and Rachel Dockery.Following is a recap thatI put together from info in the books "Dockery's of Dixie" and "Dockery 1814-1986".The latter being produced by my father-in-law.My own research in Richmond Co., NC and documents found on the internet allowed me to tie it all together. Several forum contributors also provided valuable clues.
Mathuis Dockery b 1670 was the son of Thomas Dockery who was born 1635 in England, moved to Virginia and died in Accomack, VA in 1740.
Thomas Davenport Dockery was born in 1717 in Centerville, MD of parents Mathuis (Mathias) Dockery b. 1670 in MD and Mary Airy b. abt 1685.
I have found several records on the internet referring to Thomas, Mathuis/Mathias/Matthew in Queen Anne's County, MD.Also see pages in the Dockeries of Dixie book for similar references.
In 1769 Thomas Davenport Dockery, Sr and a handfull of others including the surnames Webb, Thomas, and Covingtonmigrated to Anson Co., NC from Queen Anne's County, Maryland.
With Thomas came his children by his first wife, Hannah Covington. She died in Maryland in 1768.
The children were: Hannah, Thomas Davenport Jr and Michael.
In North Carolina he married Anne Stone abt 1770 and had the following children:
John, Esther, Nathan and Matthew M. Dockery
In Anson Co. Thomas purchased 176 acres from William Blewett and wife Elizabeth in 1770 for 86 Pounds and 10 Shillings in an area north and west about 6 miles from present day Rockingham, NC on Cartledge Creek. This land was part ofland grant (by the crown) No. 1323 on Sept 27, 1756 to Edmund Cartledge who sold it to W. Blewett.
Also, Anson County records show a document Thomas requested be recorded which I found in Deed Book 7, page 253.
This document is one in which Thomas had references from the officials in Queen Anne's County, MD and the elders of the Presbyterian Church in essence saying he and his listed relatives were of good moral character. The church in question was the famous St Paul's Church on Wye in Queen Anne's Co. I found this in a book on the history of Richmond Co.The relatives were listed as:
Ann, his wife age 32
Michael, son age 18+
John Covington, son-in-law age 35
Mathew Covington, grand-son age 10
Hannah Covington, grand-daughter age 7-1/2
Mary Covington, grand-daughter age 3-1/2
Sarah Covington, grand-daughter age 3-1/2
Josheph Hull, cousin age 16
Richmond Co was in part from the eastern part of Anson Co.
Court records show a land grant by Gov. William Tryon to Col. Thomas Dockery of 395 acres on Mt. Creek in December 1769.Col. Dockery knew about mills and how to build them and Capel's Mill is on the exact location of this grant.
Col. Thomas Dockery had served as an elder in the Presbyterian church in MD and in Richmond County he allowed his home on Cartledge Creek to be a meeting point for area residents. He later donated 3 acresabout 350 yards from his home for the construction of a meeting house which became a focal point for Baptists who were moving into the area.
There was no explanation of his change from Presbyterian to Baptist. This building became known as Dockery's Meeting House and even later the Cartledge Creek Church replaced the original building. This church stands to this day and there is a plaque referencing Dockery's Meeting House.
Early members of the church were:
Thomas and wife Anne Stone, Mathew Covington, John Covington and wife Nancy Wall, Richmond and Hannah Dockery, Eli and Esther Dockery Thomas and Robert Webb.
The Covingtons were connected by virtue of Thomas's daughter Hannah marrying John Covington while in MD. Hannah died and John later married Nancy Wall.I haven't established who Richmond and Hannah Dockery were.Thomas' other daughter Esther married Eli Thomas. Robert Webb was a close friend and later a Webb married a Dockery.
Local history says that Thomas Dockery and wife Ann as well as John Covington and his father William and other family members are buried in the old section of the Cartledge Creek Church cemetary. All the stones are unreadable.
Matthew M. Dockery was born in 1776 in Richmond Co. and was given 100 acres of land by his father per court documents dated 30 Nov 1788.Then on 16 Sep 1799 his father sold him more land for 5 shillings. In 1793, Matthew saw the potential of an area where 2 roads intersected. These were the main north-south road and east-west road in Richmond County. He bought 100 acres and put up a small trading store. In 1805 he sold this land then known as The Fairgrounds because of the Scottish Highland Games played there.
Mathew married Rachel Webb on 22 Oct 1801 in Richmond County, NC.After he sold the above land in 1805 they are next found in Alabama and settle in Madison County. He is still on the tax lists of Madison Co. in 1815 but the census of 1820 shows him in White Co., ILL and by 1840 he is in Caddo Parrish, LA.
The children of Matthew M. and Rachel Dockery were:
Isaac, Esther, Nancy, Margaret, Mary Polly, Sarah, Rachel, Learner Blackmon born Aug 13, 1818, Hannah, Samual Hull, Alfred andMatthew who is born May 24, 1814 in Madison Co, AL.
Matthew Dockery, son of Matthew M. Dockery married Sarah Ann Stotts on 14 Jun 1838 in Harris Co., TX.He died on 12 Jul 1893 in Moulton, TX.He and Sarah had 12 children including Louis Kidburn Dockery b. 1 Jun 1842, d. 7 Mar 1915 in Ft Worth, TX.Louis m. Lavinia Moon on 16 Jun 1867.They had 4 children. After Lavinia's death he married Badottie Williamson and they had 5 children including Orville Dockery, my wife's grandfather.
I have most names and some details on all the children beginning with Col Thomas Dockery.Others, such as Settle Dockery have more details on the other children of Matthew M and Rachel Dockery.
Anyone wanting more details can contact me via e-mail and I will be glad to share what I have that is not covered above.
