I am researching the Stevens line. Hopefully what I am about to relate will help with the confusion, or add to it.
I will limit the info as to how it relates to your research. I must state right off that I do not know the origin of John Stevens of Stamford.

The Old United Empire Loyalist List
Appendix B
Signed by J. WILLIAMS, C.C. page 129, Copy of the "Old U.E. List" preserved in the Crown Lands Department in Toronto
Stevens, Aaron.... Home District, Issue Commissary, Indian Department, O.I.C. February 4, 1797
Stevens, John.... Home District, Butler's Rangers or Forrester's Interpreter, Niagara stamped book, wife 4 children, P.L.N. 1786
+ Stevens, Nicholas.... Interpreter Indian Department

John Stevens with wife & 4 children, is not of the same family as Nicholas & Aaron Stevens of Schenectady.

Baptism Record of Schenectady Reformed Church, 1694-1811
Baptismal Date: 26 Sep 1762
Father: Nicholaas Stevens
Mother: Margarita Mebie
Item Number: 2668
Child: Arent
Sponsor: Willem Stevens; Catarina Stevens

Baptism Record of Schenectady Reformed Church, 1694-1811
Baptismal Date: 01 Jul 1764
Father: Nicholaas Stevens
Mother: Margarita Mebie
Item Number: 2848
Child: Johannes

Census of Niagara,1st December 1783:
Nicholas Stevens, Age 50. Interpreter, Indian Department.
Aaron Stevens, Age 21. Commissary, Indian Department.
John Stevens*, Age 19. Clerk, Indian Department.

Various petitions of Aaron Stevens (NAC) state;
Aaron Stevens, Commissary, Indian Dept, Butler's Ranger served 1778-1785
1795 Aaron Stevens, "only surviving person of his Father's family"
requests correction of his name from "Arent" old Dutch spelling to Aaron
Wife - Maria, d/o Adam Crysler late Lieu Indian Dept
Father - Nicholas, Interpreter, Indian Dept, Butler's Ranger, located no land U.C., d 1788 in service
Brother - John, Secretary, Interpreter, Indian Dept, Butler's Ranger, located no land U.C., d 1787 in service

Vale Cemetery, 907 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12307
John Stevens, d. Sept 30, 1787, in 24th yr

Second Heir & Devisee Commission
1789 -Nassau - Thos Butler & Aaron Stevens executors of deceased Nicholas Stevens formerly of Schenectady
1819 - Niagara - Nicholas Stevens s/o Aaron, states that while a minor, executors of his grandfather's will invested the legacy purchasing from Samuel Van Every Lot 77 Niagara Twp

The above is the line I am following.

However, it isn't as simple as that. It appears that the two Stevens families - John of Stamford & the line I am searching had family connections, however slight.

Sarah Jane Markle d/o Frederick Markle & Rebecca Pickard
m 1st William Staats only s/o Sylvester Staats & Fanny Stevens d/o John Stevens of Stamford
m 2nd Nicholas Stevens s/o Aaron Stevens (of Schenectady) & Maria Crysler

I am most interested in any discussion or proof that would link John Stevens of Stamford to Schenectady.

Cathy
