Oneida Doxtators, or the Cornelius Dockstader Line
Posted by: Charles Julian (ID *****7539) Date: March 16, 2006 at 02:34:53
  of 186

I've been sorting through the Cornelius line in order to provide a tree of Oneida Doxtator descent, and already there have been some interesting developments. First, Hanyery Doxtator and Hanyost Doxtator are one and the same person. This was a surprise to me, but war records for "Hanyost or Hanyere Doxtator" prove it beyond doubt, not just in providing both names as aliases, but through a description of Hanyost Doxtator's life, family and war service, the account of which matches entirely the one laid out for Hanyery in the Draper manuscript – e.g. children Jacob, Dolly, Cornelius, and Peter, in that order. This would also explain why "Hanyost Doxtator", brother of Hanyery, cannot be located in the Draper manuscript or in any other post-Revolutionary war records, and why Hanyery and Hanyost share not only the surname "Doxtator", but also the same Iroquois name, Thohwen'karahkwen, "Picks up the Snowshoe". The war pension record for Hanyost Doxtator alias Hanyere Doxtator is included at the end of this post.

Having reviewed the primary sources, I now see two possibilities for the origin of Hanyery Doxtator:

1) Hanyery Doxtator as the son of 'Cornelius Dachstaedter', son of Georg Dachstaedter

Initially this seemed like the most probable origin for Hanyery, but in all my rumaging I haven't been able to find any connection between Johan Georg Dachstaedter's family and Hanyery Doxtator, or between Johan Georg Dachstaeder's family and Oneida Castle. I still have not found any evidence for there even having been a Cornelius Dachstaedter b. 1711 NY. The child that is recorded in Georg and Anna Elisabeth's home in the census for Livingston Manor could be anyone, including e.g. a daughter who married before records for the area become widely available, or a son who did not survive, since the census record itself only gives the number of children, [ 2 ], without names. I'm unable to find reference to Cornelius as a son or brother of any of the known Palatine Dachstaedters in contemporary journals or in church records, and there is no mention of a Cornelius Dachstaedter in descriptive accounts of the early Mohawk and Oneida castles. The only Cornelius on record in the eighteenth century is Cornelius the son of Hanyery, b. Abt 1758. From the beginning 'Cornelius' has also struck me as a particularly odd name for Johan Georg and Anna Elisabeth to have named their second child, particularly because it is prototypically a Dutch name ( one which was also adopted and used extensively by the Iroquois in New Netherland ) rather than a Palatine German name, although I suppose stranger things have happened. Age-wise there are also references to Hanyery Thohwen'karahkwen which date back to the 1730s, and seem to indicate that he was probably born much earlier than the traditional date of Abt 1735. Hanyery died before 1794 ( see Appendix D ), and at the time of his death was an old man according to the Draper manuscript. Cornelius Wheelock ( b. Abt 1802 ) relates in the Draper manuscript that his grandfather had served under Hanyery in the Revolution, and had told him that "Hon Yerry was too ole for the service, yet used to go fearlessly into the fights." If Hanyery had been born in the 1730s then he would only have been about 40 during the Revolution, and if this were the case then the actions in question would hardly have been considered noteworthy. Placing Hanyery's birth in the 1720s, or even as early as Abt 1714 as I am inclined to do, would not only account for the earliest reference to him ( c. 1734 ) but also eliminate the need for a second-generation Cornelius Dachstaedter ( b. 1711 ) link. At this point some proof of the existence of a Cornelius Dachstaedter in period sources will need to be found before I can consider this origin a viable possibility.

2) Hanyery Doxtator as Unrelated to the Palatine German Dachstaedters ( Apart from Surname )

As has been noted previously ( http://www.angelfire.com/on3/oneida/page5b.html ) there are numerous references to an Oneida "Odatsheckta" or "O-dat-saiht" in New York during this period. These are renderings of the hereditary Oneida Wolf Clan title Otatshehte [ oh-daht-seh-hdeh ] "Carries a Quiver". The Oneida surname Doxtator could conceivably have developed as an Anglicization of this title ( 'Dachstaedter' fitted to Mohawk or Oneida phonotactics would be pronounced DAHT-seh-dah ), as Hanyery was an Oneida chief and of the Wolf Clan. In the Draper Manuscript it is related that Hanyery's son Cornelius ( Abt 1758-1814 ) inherited the chieftancy from his father. This would have been somewhat unusual, given that children do not belong to their father's clan and so traditionally cannot inherit their father's office, but if indeed Cornelius Doxtator did inherit his chieftainship paternally as the account relates then he may also have kept the title O-dot-saiht-a, if this is indeed the office in question. Anglicization to "Doxtator" can probably be accounted for by widespread occurrence of the German surname "Dachstaedter" in New York State by the 1770s and 1780s. Such a late origin for the surname is remarkably plausable, since as far as I can tell the surname "Doxtator" was not applied to this family until shortly before the war of 1812, and it remains unattested in e.g. the 1794 Account of Losses among the Oneida, though other surnames do occur ( See Appendix D ). If this is indeed how the Oneida surname Doxtator developed, as the anglicization of a League title, then the Dachstaedters of the Mohawk Valley and the Doxtators of Oneida Castle will have been related in surname only, with somewhat vague legends of paternity having developed among descendants in the next century as an explanation for the name, e.g. "Hon Yerry's father was a German named Doxtator – hence Hon Yerry's German name" ( Draper 1877 ).

To lend creedence to the hypothesis that Oneida Doxtator is an anglicization of Otatshehte, it will be necessary to demonstrate that the office which was held by Hanyery and his son Cornelius was indeed that of Otatshehte. This proves to be somewhat difficult because although historically it was very often recorded that there were "yea many chiefs", or that someone "was a chief", mention of which specific offices were held by which specific people is seldom furnished, and this makes tangible proof of who held a given office that much harder to find. The Oneida Nation website relates the following:

"Americans feared invasion from Canada throughout much of 1776. Late that year, another Oneida leader brought accurate intelligence indicating there would be no attack that year. Ojistalak was a sachem (holder of a League office) in the Wolf clan. The Oneidas had nine such titles and they carried immense prestige. Ojistalak's title (Otatshete) was considered to be the highest and, as a gifted public speaker (he spoke for the sachems in the council), he was a very influential man among the Oneidas. Strongly pro-American in outlook, Ojistalak had a great deal to do with the pro-American stand of the Oneidas during the war. It is likely that it was Ojistalak who, in 1778, declared his Nation's "unalterable resolution" at every hazard, to hold fast the Covenant Chain with the United States, and with which to be buried in the same grave, or to enjoy the fruits of victory and peace."

Otsistalak is a suffixed variant of Otsistarare/Otsistalale, "Grasshopper", which was Hanyery's nickname ( see Appendix C ). While the above account and this consideration would seem to settle the point, there nonetheless remains the puzzling occurrence of the signatures of both Otsistalale AND Otatshehte on documents signed in the 1770s and 1780s ( see Appendix C ). Hanyery is generally interpreted as having been the leader of the Oneida at the time of the Revolution, and it will not be unexpected if he turns out also to have been Otatshehte, but it will be important to establish too e.g. how many people were called "Grasshopper" and what was the significance of the name. There is also a "Widow Grasshopper" in the Losses Sustained Document of 1794, Appendix D, though this does not appear to have been Hanyery's widow. A "Peter Otsistarare" ( Hanyery's son? ) signed documents using this Grasshopper name as well in the mid 1780s and 1790s, and so perhaps Grasshopper was also an inherited title of some sort. Future research can hopefully clear up some of these questions.

Appendix A: Hanyost Doxtator's War Pension ( 1848 )

------------

S 23019

In the matter of the declaration of Peter Doxtator, only surviving child of Captain Honyost Tewahangarahken alias Doxtader, deceased, for arrears of pension.

State of New York
Madison County

Before me personally came David Welsh a credible and disinterested person a United States Invalid Pensioner, now a resident of Munsville, in said county, who being duly sworn doth depose and say that he has known Peter Doxtader from the earliest infancy, And was well and intimately acquainted with his said father and was Captain Doxtator and Dolly, his wife [ i.e. Peter's wife ], that said Captain Doxtator was a captain in said war and served with the deponent's father or at the same places if not under the same General.

That said Capt. Doxtator in 1780 was at Fort Timmerman on the Mohawk Flats with this deponent’s father who was then under Col. Jacob Klock who had charge of said fort; that at the same time Col. Peter Bellinger Commanded at Fort Nellis a distance of about 3 miles; that the Indians who served at Fort Timmerman had their families there and said Peter’s mother and this deponent’s mother among other Indian women were there at said fort. That Col. Klock ordered his Regiment to go to Fort Nellis to said Col. Bellinger in [ defending ] his fort against an anticipated attack on that fort by British and Indians adverse to the American Cause.

Accordingly all the officers and soldiers left for Fort Nellis and left the protection of Fort T. that after the troops had all left as aforesaid, the unfriendly Mohawks Indians, attacked said Fort T. and it was protected by the women aforesaid by their firing through the front holes. That his said mother and said Peter’s mother fought bravely to defend said fort. That the front was then but quite a small bay at that time. That said Captain Honyery was often at both forts and he was then informed that he was a brave and useful officer.

That he and his wife always lived together as husband and wife were always so reported to be, and they had four children, to wit, Jacob, Dolly, Cornelius and Peter, all are well known to the deponent.

That said captain Honyost died at Oneida on the 4th day of July A.D. 1839 and that his wife still survived him and remained resident at Muddville. She died at Oneida on the 3d day of July A. D. 1844. He is sure of the date because of having been present at the funeral services. Said Capt. Hanyost received his pay for a part of his services in Continental money to wit $240 that he served to the close of the year to December 1784 and in a few years thereafter he received the 600 acres in the 26 township of [ ? ] as bounty land.

This deponent further says that he has no interest in the results of this case or in any wise intrusted and further deponent saith not.

(Signed with his mark) David Welsh
22 August 1848

Declaration

In order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed May 15th 1828, granting pensions to all who served to the end of the Revolutionary War 4 July 1836.

State of New York
County of Oneida.

Be it known, that on this 22d day of December in the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and fifty-two personally appeared before the Hon. Ralph McIntosh, Special Surrogate in and for the County of Oneida, and said State of New York, Peter Doxtator a reputable person he belonging to the Oneida Tribe of Indians and Chief of the 1st Christian Party of said Indians aged 65 years a resident of Ternon [ ? ] In the County and State aforesaid who is the child and legitimate heir of Captain Hon-yost Ten-a-hon-gar-age-kan who was so known and called when he was a Captain in the Revolutionary War but who after wards resumed the name of Capt. Hon-yere Doxtator, now deceased, and who being duly sworn according to law doth make oath to the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed May 15th, 1828 Entitled an "Act granting pensions to all the officers who served to the end of the Revolutionary war in the Continental Army". That his said father the said Captain Hon-yost Ten-a-hon-gar-age-kan alias Honyere Doxtator was a resident of Oriskany Castle known by the name of Onia-ala-aak [ prob. Otsistalak ] in the County of Oneida and State of New York.

When in 1775 in the month of June he enlisted in a company of Oneida Indians who were friendly to the Americans in the struggle for liberty, and entered into the militia service of the Revolutionary War and that he continued to serve in said war as a Captain in the Continental Line of State Troops to the termination thereof when he was honorably discharged, but which discharge has been lost or destroyed; that he received a bounty in land of eighteen hundred acres, as follows to wit.

One lot number thirty containing six thousand acres and lot number eighty one containing six hundred acres, both situate in the Township of Genesee And another lot No seventy seven containing six hundred acres situate in the Township of Pomkey Containing which was deeded to him by letters bearing date sometime in the year A. D. 1791.

That his said father died at the Town of Lina or Oneida Castle in the County and state aforesaid on the fourth day of July A. D. 1839 at the age of 94 years, leaving a widow Sally Doxtator, his mother, formerly Sally Cobus, to whom he was married by the Rev't Abraham Johnson on the 20 day of August in the year A. D. 1774 who continued to live and unmarried at Oneida Castle as aforesaid until the 23d day of July A. D. 1844 when she died without having applied for the pension or arrears to which she was entitled as he has been informed and believes and that he hereby makes application for the same as the only legitimate heir of the same Capt. Honyere Tenhanyarsakken alias Capt. Honyost Doxtator and Doxtator both deceased.

He further declares that his said father was sometime during the service under General Herkimer. That he was engaged in several battles while in said war, to wit: the Battle at Oriskany, the Battle of Fort Stanwix, and numerous other battles not now remembered by this declarant.

He further says that the said Captain Honyere Doxtator was at one time under the command of General Jacob Klock and other generals during his continuance in said war. This declarant further claims in right of his mother Sally deceased as aforesaid, and as widow of the said Capt. Honyere Tewahangarahkin alias Captain Honyere Doxtator under the act of Congress passed on the 4th day of July 1836, or any other act under which he may be entitled as the sole heir as aforesaid.

He further states that he is incapacitated by bodily infirmity to attend open court and further he saith not.

Appendix B: The Other Hanyost Doxtator War Pension

------------

Details of the Hanyost Doxtator war pension above are at odds with details found in a secod Hanyost Doxtator war pension, the contents of which are related by Doris Dockstader-Rooney in The Dockstader Family:

"Affidavits in behalf of Jenny Doxtator, widow of Honyost Doxtator, pension file (R3065) signed by Peter Doxtator, 65, and Henry Powles, 72, (both by mark) of Vernon in Oneida County, New York, state: '... well acquainted with Lieutenant Honyost Tewahangarahken and were present at his burial ... who was called and known by the white people as Honyost Doxtator by which name he was called until he died ... Jenny Doxtator was married to the Lieut. Honyost Tewahangarahken at Oriskany in said county of Oneida 16th day of January 1778 before the expiration of his term of service who continued to live until the 29th day of March 1838 when he departed his natural life at Oneida ... They had several children, all dead.' An affadavit, dated 27 August 1853, shows Jenny now aged 93 of Vernon in Oneida County." ( pp. 9-10 )

The only Jennie Doxtator in the tree above is Jennie (Jane) Skanando, the wife and widow of Cornelius Dockstader, Hanyery's son and successor who died at the Battle of Chippewa in 1814. In this case it is possible that the name and record of service of Hanyere alias Hanyost Doxtator were used in order to afford the widow of Cornelius some monetary relief. It's also possible that there was a 'deadline' in years for applying to receive the pension of a deceased soldier, and consequently the date of Cornelius Doxtator's death (d. 1814) needed to be "pulled forward" in order for the widow to be eligible for compensation. Pension A was filed AUG 1848, and in it "Hanyere" is said to have died "1839" – so perhaps eligibility for receiving a deceased soldier's pension involved a ten-year cut-off clause. I'm uncertain as to whether this other pension application was filed before or after 29 MAR 1848.
