Dochstaders of Home District
Posted by: Charles Julian (ID *****7539) Date: April 19, 2006 at 21:01:16
In Reply to: John Dochstader's Third Wife by Charles Julian of 187

I've set out to map the Dochstaders of Home District ( i.e. the Niagara Penninsula – principally the counties of Haldimand, Lincoln and Niagara ) and have come to the conclusion that, apart from Doxtators at Six Nations, all the Dochstaders in the region descend from Henry3 of Caistor, including the Sarah5 Dochstader who married William Fradenbergh and the William5 Dochstader who married Hannah Dennis. Every reference to a John Dochstader other than Captain John3 of the Grand River that I've come across has traced back to Henry3 Dochstader's son Sergeant John4 Dochstader rather than to John4 Dochstader Jr, with the exception of a single quotation from Warner and Beers History of Brant County ( 1883 ):

"During the year 1822, the Methodist Missionary Society of the Methodist Church in Canada, seeing the necessity of looking to the spiritual welfare of the Indians, conceived the idea of establishing an Indian Mission for the Province, and appointed the Rev. Alvin Torrey as Missionary on the Grand River ... His labour having been successful, and having secured the conversion and support of such Indian chiefs as James Givens, Jacob Isaac, John Dockstader and others, the mission became permanently established in this county."

I'd be willing to bet that this Chief John Dockstader of Six Nations was Captain John's son John4 Junior, who would have been about 54 years old in 1822. Accordingly his descendants ( and those of his brother Joseph? ) are probably the Doxtators who appear in the 1871 and 1881 Canadian censuses for Tuscarora Twp in County Brant. Since these Doxtators now appear also to be descendants of Captain John3, some preliminary efforts to chart their ancestry back to him are included as an appendix to this post.

Below are given the lineages of Henry3, John3 and Frederick3 Dochstader UE whose descendants settled in the Niagara Penninsula. Helpful information and some obscure microfilm sources which helped clear up numerous uncertainties were provided by Janette. The tree below is my own interpretation of the info at hand, however, and that includes any glitches. Footnotes are used to clarify points that need clarifying.

[ 1 ] The first major correction to be made to my tentative tree in the 'Early Dockstaders' post: I have there posited that the Adam who married Maria Philipse is Henry's eldest son George Adam4, but this does not appear to fit. This Adam was too old to have been a son of Henry3 since there is a sponsorship record from 1762 in which he is the sponsor; as I have it he would have been six years old at this time ( ! ), thus, not a good fit. In the record in question, which is for George Adam4 the son of George Adam3, Adam is referred to as an unmarried son of Hendrick; therefore he must have been the son of Henry2 and Catherine Weber rather than of Henry3 and Magdalene. It would thus appear that Adam3 sponsored not on behalf of an uncle ( a la Early Dochstaders and Doris D-R ) but on behalf of an older cousin of the same name with a child of the same name. The change to be made is:

Henry3 of Caistor's real son George Adam4 was probably born Abt 1759, died Abt 1792, and had a widow named Catherine according to a petition of 04 FEB 1807. His sons, John5 and George Henry5, are mentioned in Henry3 of Caistor's will of 1809.

[ 2 ] I take this John to have been John5, son of George Adam4, though theoretically he might also have been e.g. an older son of John4 ( as yet unattested ). The officiating clergy at this marriage was Robert Nelles J.P.

[ 3 ] George Henry5 Dochstader married Julia C. Young ( Delaware ), daughter of Abraham Young ( Mohawk ) and Ellen Dennis ( Delaware ), granddaughter of John Young ( German ) and Catherine Hill ( Mohawk ), Ezekiel Dennis ( Quaker ) and Julia ( Delaware ). Julia Young was a cousin of Hannah Dennis who married George Henry5 Dochstader's cousin William5. George Henry5 and Julia are buried in the Briggs cemetery on Captain John Dochstader's property. The combined evidence of this tombstone and the will of George Henry5 ( written 11 AUG 1837 and proved 25 APR 1838, data from which was provided by Janette ) indicates that Julia the wife of George Henry5 died in July 1837 shortly after the birth of their youngest son, William A. George Henry5 himself then died in December and his son William A. died the following spring. The cause of the rapid succession of deaths in this family is not known.

[ 4 ] This John4 Dochstader b. 1760 is the one who is often confused for his uncle, Captain John3 Dochstader of the Grand River. "Sergeant John Dochstader" was a Corporal in the Indian Department during the Revolution according to the old UEL list, and during the settlement of Niagara he received land near Six Nations. He married a Delaware woman named Catherine at an unknown date. Much of the following info comes from several affadavits attached to William Fradenbergh's Land Petition of 1841, Microfilm #C-11,477, found by Janette. In 1814 ( certain other accounts give 1812 as the date ) Sergeant John4 and his family left for the United States travelling in five canoes down the Grand River in the dead of night. Reasons for this departure vary according to source, but according to the 1841 affadavit of Walter Sheehan, John4 was going to visit his son Nicholas5 who had been taken prisoner at the Battle of Niagara. Sergeant John's son-in-law William Fradenbergh put in a land claim for Sergeant John's former property and succeeded in obtaining a large tract. In the early 1840s John4 and his wife Catherine, both very aged, came back to Canada to live with William and Sarah Fradenbergh; prior to this they had apparently been living on the Cattaraugus Reserve in New York State. Sergeant John4, his wife Catherine, and the Fradenberghs are interred at the South Cayuga Baptist Cemetery. John's tombstone indicates that he lived to be 101, his wife 96, though this is almost certainly an exaggeration, and probably yet another reason that John4 has often been confused with his uncle John3, who himself wouldn't have even been of such age.

[ 5 ] The identity of Sergeant John's wife Catherine is not known, but when William Fradenbergh petitioned for his father-in-law's land it was stated in the affadavit of Perry Gifford that Sgt. John had left his property with the Tunis family, relatives of his wife Catherine. Tunis is a not uncommon Iroquois rendering of the name Dennis owing to no voicing distinction in the languages ( cf. e.g. "Tunis Halftown" in the Buffalo Creek Treaty of 1826 ). The Dennis Family in the area are descendants of Ezekiel Dennis of New Jersey who married a Delaware woman named Julia and resided at Point Abino, Upper Canada. Henry3 of Caistor's grandsons George Henry5 and William5 both married granddaughters of Ezekiel Dennis, so it would not be unexpected if Sergeant John's wife also proves to have been part of this family. In order to be related to the Dennis family, who were indeed Delaware through Ezekiel's wife, Catherine must have been either a daughter or a granddaughter of Ezekiel Dennis the settler, and given her age she would more probably have been his daughter. Ezekiel Dennis' daughter Catherine is at present believed to have married Daniel Forsythe, however the Dennis family is not yet well documented and many dates remain speculative ( e.g. Forsythes are not mentioned in Ezekiel's will of 1803, although this is the same year Catherine is thought to have married him, she being aged 30 or more at the time ). I have a hunch that Sgt. John's wife Catherine was Ezekiel Dennis' daughter, and that the Catherine Dennis who married Daniel Forsythe was Ezekiel's granddaughter, but I'm unable to show this as yet.

[ 6 ] In an affadavit of 1841 Sergeant John Dochstader states that he and Catherine had 14 children. I sure hope this was an exaggeration to get land.

[ 7 ] Henry4 Dochstader was the favorite nephew of Captain John3 Dochstader who received John's suit of regimentals upon the latter's decease. Henry4's son George Henry5 lived on Captain John's property and is buried there with his wife and son. The wife of Henry4 is not known.

[ 8 ] William5 Dochstader married Hannah Dennis, daughter of William Dennis ( Delaware ) and Sarah Anderson ( English, adopted by the Onondagas ). William Dennis was a son of Ezekiel Dennis ( Quaker ) and Julia ( Delaware ), and a brother to the Ellen Dennis who married Abraham Young, making Hannah Dennis a cousin to the above-mentioned Julia Young who married George Henry5 Dochstader. David K. Faux's "Understanding First Nations Genealogical Records" contains a considerable amount of information on Hannah and this branch of the family. I've here taken William5 Dochstader to be a son of Henry4 on the basis of an account from 1816-17 wherein Henry Dochstader of Caistor is doing business with a Mr. Samuel Street and at one point sends his son William to deliver a bond to him ( Janette came across this account on microfilm MS 500 R1 at the Ontario Archives ). The only William Dochstaders on record from this era are the infant son of George Henry5 above ( not yet born ) and the son of William5 himself ( also not yet born ), thus William Dochstader who married Hannah Dennis was probably the son of Henry4 of Caistor rather than a son of John Dochstader Jr.

[ 9 ] Adam5 Dochstader is here taken to be the son of Henry based on the following considerations: Neither of George Adam4 Dochstader's two sons are likely to be his father ( George Henry5 was too young and John5 was apparently not yet married ), Joseph4 Dochstader's family is fully accounted for, and Sergeant John4 Dochstader's family left for the U.S. in 1812 and did not return until 1841, whereas Adam's sons were born in Ontario. As a result Henry4 of Caistor seems to be the best candidate.

[ 10 ] Isaac Dochstader married ( second ) Uzilla Rittenhouse on 26 MAY 1874 and is ( mis-? )transcribed as "James Dochstader" in the 1881 census.

[ 11 ] No apparent trace of these Dochstaders following their birth records.

[ 12 ] The surname "Smoke" is used for lack of any known English name for Guyanguahta other than "Old Smoke". Sarah's Iroquois name is not known. The Journal of Major John Norton ( 1816 ) gives her first husband Roland Montour's Iroquois name as Eghnisera ( Enhnísera' "Day" ) and indicates that he was a War Chief serving with Brant in the spring of 1779.

[ 13 ] Maria Burnham is born so early ( consistently 1802 or 1803 in the census ) that I initially thought she must be the daughter of Mary4 Dochstader rather than of Catherine, though e.g. the I.G.I. states otherwise. The statement of the chiefs that "the oldest daughter is dead" did not come until November 1806, and Catherine Dochstader was born Abt 1789 according to the census – hence it would seem that Maria born 1802/1803 is either the daughter of a 20/21-year-old Mary or the daughter of a 13/14-year-old Catherine, and in that case I would therefore suspect Mary4, since Catherine4 would probably not have married Chauncey Burnham until at least 1804 or 1805 when she was 15 or 16. However, Janette notes the following item which implies that Catherine4 is indeed Maria's mother: "Catherine Burnham signs an affadavit dated the 13 June 1838 before Alpheus S. St. John in Dunnville. ( Alpheus St. John is an executor to the Dochsteder will. ) The last sentence reads 'and further this deponent saith that John Burnham who claims a part of the estate of the late Capt. John Dochstader is not her son but the son of her late sister Mary Burnham and the only surviving heir of the late Mary Burnham.' Not is underlined in the affadavit." Maria Burnham Farr was still alive in 1838, so along with the chiefs' earlier conveyance of land to John3 Dochstader's "grandson of the Cayugas" ( i.e. no mention of Maria ) the evidence would seem to indicate that Catherine4 Dochstader was indeed Maria's mother, and that Catherine4 was probably born nearer 1787.

[ 14 ] The spouses of John DeCew's family are taken from Green ( 1925 ) who got them from the DeCou Genealogy. The only one I can vouch for is that Frederick DeCew married Elizabeth Lacey 30 OCT 1830 in Thorold Township. A "Caroline Hagar" appears in the 1881 census aged 60, ancestry given as French ( the usual response of the Huguenot DeCews, though Edmund was apparently "Swiss" Huguenot in 1871 ), so Eva Caroline DeCew's entry is probably verified. Edmund DeCew was widowed by the time of the 1881 census and living with the family of his son-in-law Robert King. The other siblings could not be located in this census.

APPENDIX A: Early Doxtators at Six Nations

------------

The Doxtators of Six Nations might equally be descendants of Hanyery Doxtator of Oneida Castle, but the fact that so many of the early ones ( all of them in fact ) are Mohawks rather than Oneidas points toward more probable descent from Captain John3 Dochstader's sons John4 and Joseph4 of Mohawk Castle. The earliest reference to a Doxtator at Six Nations is the "Chief John Dockstader" reference from 1822 mentioned above, wherein Chief John4 is a supporter of early missionary efforts on the reserve. Curiously the next early reference to a Six Nations Doxtator that I've come across occurs in the Oneida Nation Powless Diary from Wisconsin:

"Deaths 1842, Duck Creek, Green Bay:

"Rev. William Doxtator died in Canada April 3. Rev. Doxtator is a Mohawk, he was the first to be authorized to be in charge of Methodist Church in Oneida Castle, State of New York, A.D. 1828. It was thru him that we accepted the Methodist Church, he is from Ohsweken."

Is the Reverend William Doxtator of Ohsweken related to the Chief John4 Dochstader who helped establish a Methodist mission at the Grand River twenty years earlier? My guess would be that William is either the son of John4 Junior or else a nephew, the son of Joseph4. The next Six Nations reference available is the 1871 census and forward, which is quite a bit further on. The lines that can be gathered from these censuses, and from "Some Descendants of Joseph Brant" by J. Ojijatekha Brant-Sero ( 1899 ), are as follows:
