Re: Oneida Doxtators, or the Cornelius Dockstader Line

In Reply to: Oneida Doxtators, or the Cornelius Dockstader Line by Charles Julian of 187

I thought the Hanyery line might need reworking, on account of I no longer think Doxtator can have derived from OtŠtshehte ( or at least will have, given Jacob Doxtator's presence at the German Flatts in the 1780s and Hans Georg Dachstetter's also residing there ) and consequently Hanyery may have been linked to the German Dockstaders after all. After re-reading the Draper manuscript and then consulting some other sources, I've come to believe that Hanyery Doxtator Thohwen'karŠhkwen and Blatcup Schuyler Thonien'takŠ:ion were probably full brothers, were probably not European, and probably borrowed their European names from comrades during the French and Indian Wars.

The Draper manuscript gives Hanyery's brother, "by a German named Schuyler", as Blatcup Schuyler, who was the father of Moses Schuyler. Blatcup's Oneida name is given as Thonien'takŠ:ion, "Old Legs", in the Draper Manuscript. The Iroquois Indians Microfilm Collection has the following entry for Thonien'takŠ:ion Ė

"THANYENDAGAYON (or KANYENDAGAYON; SCHUYLER, Philip) Ė has deceived the Oneidas, according to Frederick Haldimand in speech to the Oneidas. [1780] a message from, was presented by Iroquois delegates to the Six Nations at Niagara. Feb. 17-19, 1780."

So ( assuming this entry refers to General Philip Schuyler rather than to Blatcup ) Philip Schuyler's Oneida name was Thonien'takŠ:ion. This would imply that Thonien'takŠ:ion took the name of the general, and that the general took the name of Thonien'takŠ:ion, just as Hanyery Doxtator appears to have taken the name of Hans Georg Dachstetter of the German Flatts. While it is possible that General Schuyler, who was a close acquaintance of Hanyery and the Oneidas during the Revolution, was the father of Blatcup Schuyler, out of wedlock, I think this is rather unlikely since a) there is no tradition regarding Schuyler having had a Mohawk or Oneida mistress; b) the fact that the "German named Schuyler" was General Schuyler would probably have been mentioned in the Draper manuscript, and c) Blatcup Schuyler, Hanyery's brother "Ton-yen-ta-goyon", is recorded as "Henry Trathroop" in the 1794 Account of Losses Ė if Thonien'takŠ:ion were really the son of a German named Schuyler, which is the surname his children also took, why would he have had occasion to use a different name? The answer is probably that "Philip Schuyler", like "Hans Georg Dachstetter", was adopted from a comrade during the French and Indian War as a pseudonym and was not set in stone. Judging from the Microfilm entry above, which almost certainly pertains to General Schuyler, a European whose name had been borrowed was in turn granted use of the borrower's name. In theory this would make the "Robert Hunter KarontowŠ:nen" phenomenon rampant, since historical reference to a name might pertain either to the European individual or to the Six Nations individual Ė e.g. by this prediction, Hans Georg Dachstetter of German Flatts will have had the Iroquois name Thohwen'karŠhkwen if he had occasion to use this.

In any event, I'd now guess that Thohwen'karŠhkwen and Thonien'takŠ:ion were brothers of the Wolf clan with the same mother and probably also the same father. During the French and Indian Wars the former took the name "Hans Georg Doxtator" as his European name, the latter took "Philip Schuyler". Moses Schuyler inherited this surname from his father, and Oneida Schuylers would thus appear to descend from the same couple as Oneida Doxtators, albeit through Hanyery's brother.

Note that the only other Schuyler mentioned in the Draper Manuscript, "Han Yost Schuyler" referenced in Simms' Trappers of New York, cannot have been the father of Blatcup, since Han Yost Schuyler was born 1744 to Peter Davidse and Barbara Elizabeth Herkimer Schuyler, and by the time Han Yost was old enough to marry and have children, c. 1762, Hanyery's mother would have been nigh in her seventies if not her eighties. Thus, although Han Yost Schuyler did live among the Oneidas previous to the Revolution, the remark in the Draper Manuscript, "maybe he was Blatcup's father", is merely speculation based on the surname.

The origin of the name "Henry Trathroop" from 1794 is a mystery, but it possibly reflects the surname "Lathrop/Lathrob", which is attested early in NY and appears later in a list of Oneida migrants to the Thames. The surname "Cobis", which turns up frequently in association with various Doxtator spouses, is apparently a patronym derived from Dutch "Jacobus", and perhaps indicates only that one's father's name is Jacob.
