Hi there,
There is actually another discussion elsewhere on name origins. It tends to get lost in the mists oftime and mythology unfortunately. If you believe thhe dictionary of British Surnames I once read it stems from old Germanic (== Old English) meaning slow, rounded or stupid). The Scottish etymology is supposedly based around a village in Fife nemed Dodys or something like that.I know there Dodds's in Fife and in Ayrshire in Scotland, as well as in the Borders.
Two other major centres for the name seem to be Northern England and North Wales. The Northen English group take their name from the Dodd Family which were one of the many Border Reivers. As for the original source for the family name its anyone's guess.
I find myself doubting that old dictionary. It seems more likely to me that someone with the surname Dods or Doddys or Dod was a bit thick and then someone tried to put both together.
