Samuel Robinson Dodds/Lily Stacey

I'm doing research on Samuel Robinson Dodds (g-grandfather) who married Lily (or Lillie A) Stacey, daughter of Henry Stacey.

I've got census records for John S. Dodds, his wife Susan, and a son Robinson (1860); a Robert S. Dodds and Lillie A. Stacey marrying 4 Feb 1883; a census for Robert S. Dodds, Lillie, and daughter Mabel.

Here is where it gets interesting, all other census records are for Samuel R. Dodds. I found an obit comment for a Robert Dodds who died 1903, supposedly a famous riverboat captain, son of John S. Dodds, but Samuel R. Dodds appears to have been buried in Oakdale cemetery in 1936. My mother does have memories of Samuel R. Dodds being a riverboat captain, and he did list that on an Iowan census card for as a river boat pilot.

Does anyone have any history on this branch of the Dodds an can shade any light on whether Lillie married 1 man, who for some reason used different names? Or were the 2 brothers, possibly one being 'illegitimate'? Samuel R. Dodds record show his mother was a Margaret McConnell on ancestry as a note, but nothing mentioning that is in the accompanying image.
