John Locke Doggett was one of the earliest settlers of Florida after its purchase by the United States, and founded, with Col. Isaiah D. Hart, the city of Jacksonville, which he named in honor of Pres. Jackson, from whom he received the appointment of territorial judge. He was born 4 Oct 1801 in Taunton, and died 8 Jan 1844 in Jacksonville, FL. I have that he grad. Brown University in 1821. He married Maria Fairbanks on 9 Nov 1823 in Mendon, MA. Information on birth dates of children and Maria in “New Englanders in the Florida Census of 1850,NEHGSR 1922,V76,P 49, I believe. Lyn
