The Dictionary of Surnames lists DOIDGE as 'a Devon form of Dodge'. I recall my late grandmother telling me the story that way back in time, when the name was Dodge, a family dispute resulted in somebody legally changing his name by placing an 'i' in it. She also said we are distantly related to the Dodge brothers of automobile fame and Dodge City, Kansas. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of all of this however.
