Hi Debra,

In response to your query about John Hancock and family this is the information I have.

It was in March 1859 that John Hancock Doidge took his family to Port Elizabeth in South Africa, where he was engaged along with a number of other people to build a break water. They left England aboard the ship "Great Britain." The trip lasted six weeks.

John left Port Elizabeth on a vessel carrying grain charted by a Mr.Court. The family settled in Thames where John worked in Prices Foundry as an engineer. After Harriet died perticaarditus in 1876 when John Thomas was only 15 years John married Maori woman, who had been previously married to a Mr McKenzie. Her name was Eliza ,the daughter of a maori princess(KARAWHE). Eliza & John Hanck Doidge had two children Catherine (Kate) born 1881,and Alfred Ernest born 1883.
