Even though I have not found a census record showing John Dokey and his father Stephen Dokey (or Dokie) in the same household at the same time, possibly the best evidence for the relationship is that the members of the family seemed to follow the same path in moving from one place to another: New York, Michigan, and Arkansas (with a stopover in Indiana in 1860 for my great grandfather John). Also, John said his father was born in Canada on census forms.
I am not descended from Abram Dokey, but there seems to be a question about whether he is a son or a brother of Stephen (the elder). It is not clear when Stephen was born, but some of the estimates of birth years from census records make him too young to be the father of Abram.
