Chris Dolley,

The Dollys I'm fmailiar with and know because I bear the name are British, English Canadian, English American or from the British colonies in the West Indians. The Normans did invade England but are your ancestors mostly of French descent? The Domesday book was published shortly after the Battle of Hastings. (Few Friends and relatives) because the stories for my name Dolly family name have English and Irish stories although I've heard about the possible fable above. In England during the old days they pronounced names as they were spelt.

Wayne Jeffrey Dolly

Dooley, Dolley, Doll, Dole, Dolle, Dolli, Dolman, Doyle etc. drop the man in Dolman, Dolling etc. or a few misspellings that weren't corrected. They weren't all closely related but my Dollys in Canada are 90% caucasian (white) in North America from United Kingdom origin or Afro-centric descent (black) from West Indian origins. In the West Indies Trinidad or Barbados that ratio above would be reversed. I am mixed race half of the full caucasian race/ full afrocentric race with maternal English names that are not common but well-known bearing family crests and shields.
