Mary,

The Richard Dollins Family Bible has been donated to UVA Library, Alderman Library. Recently I saw a copy of a letter written to Hugh Dollins thanking him for the gift to UVA. My Godmother, Edith Marie Martin Colyier Kaufman, had a copy of the letter and, I believe, a copy of the family records from that Holy Bible.

I have the death date for Richard Dollins as 1774. Richard was married to Elizabeth. I have just begun searching VA census records at the Virginia State Library. Then I hope to verify births, marriages, children's names and death dates. The Charlottesville Albemarle Historical Society (in the old McIntire Library building) has some family information. Mr. Gianniny is extremely helpful there on Monday mornings.

The Dollins family started the first nurseries. Old maps indicate their placement in Albemarle County (perhaps this is the beginning of the Crown Orchards and other mountain orchards)(old county maps are located in the Chville/Albe Historical Society). Some of family properties were around what is today Miller School land.

Our family recently placed a headstone and fence around our Grandfather's grave and two other gravesites. My Grandfather was Guy Ulous Martin. He died in 1923 when my Father was just a toddler. The family cemetery is near French's Store in Batesville, Virginia. Guy's parents were Sally Jane Dollins and John Thomas Martin. Guy was married previously to Mattie Dudley, they had several children. I only knew one of their children, Dora.

Somewhere I heard or read the two Dollins brothers had a disagreement and one changed the spelling, hence Dollins and Dollens.

My Mother and siblings live in Charlottesville. My husband and I recently returned to Richmond, VA. I would be interested in sharing what little information I have gathered and see if we are somehow related.
