These are the generally accepted facts about Dennis Dunham.

He was born about 1750, some say 15 Jan 1749/50 or 50/51 (remember, this was when the calendar year still started in March). Many agree that he was born in Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey.

He married Dorothy Phillips about 1770, possibly in Maryland.

They had the following children:
Mary Dunham, c1771
John Dunham, c1774 in Hartford County, Maryland
Timothy Dunham, c1775 in Hartford County, Maryland
Sarah Dunham Morris, c1777
Jonathan Dunham, c1781 in Virginia or Georgia
Hannah Dunham Skaggs, 1782
Effie Dunham Skaggs, c1784
Phoebe Dunham Higgins, c1787
Dorothy Dunham Skaggs, c1789
Dennis Dunham Jr., c1791

He joined the Maryland Militia in 1775.

He was living in Warren County, Kentucky, by 1790, where he died in 1818.

Those are the generally accepted facts. Now I need some serious researchers to join me in a little creative speculation...

Some contributors to the Ancestry World Tree give his father as John Dunham, born about 1723...any thoughts there?

Because of the given name "Dennis", some have speculated that he is a son or grandson to the Mary Dennis Dunham, daughter of Jonathan and Agnes Sharp Dunham of Woodbridge, NJ. On AWT, Mary Dennis is shown to have married Daniel Dunham and had sons Daniel and Jonathan before her husband Daniel died in 1739. She is also shown to have married a John/Jonathan Dunham. Another interesting source says that she died in January 1750/51, coincidentally corresponding with Dennis Dunham's birth.

On AWT, Daniel Dunham is shown to have been a son of David and Mary Ilsey Dunham, and grandson of the infamous Jonathan Dunham alias Singletary, and g-grandson of the Richard Singletary, whose story is legendary among Dunham descendants. As the only surviving heir to a title, estate and fortune in England belonging to the Dunham family, he was marked out for death by those who wanted his inheritance. A merciful nurse took him to America and abandoned him under the name Singletary. His son Jonathan later reclaimed the name Dunham.

Now, it has been reported on the internet (I saw it several times in various AWT files) that DNA testing has confirmed that the Singletary and Dunham lines...specifically descendants of Dennis Dunham and a Samuel Dunham, born in Woodbridge, NJ, about 1745...share the same DNA!

Was our Dennis Dunham a son/grandson of Daniel and Mary Dennis Dunham? Or perhaps of Jonathan and Mary Dennis Dunham?
