Mr. Harris, I hope you are still at the e-mail address which is posted for your 1-31-2002 entry at GenForum. You refer to Thomas Donnell who married Jane Latham. They are my ancestors. Their son Robert was born in NC in 1752 and died in 1816. Robert's wife was the daughter of Robert Donnell 2d and his wife Mary.
In Rev. S. M. Rankin's "History of Buffalo Church and Her People, he wrote that Thomas Donnell & Robert Donnell Sr were brothers, James Senior (who came in 1760) and Robert, the second (who came in 1771) may have been NEPHEWS of Thomas and Robert Sr.
In "William Donnell's Heirs", a small booklet from Folder 45 on the Donnell Family, William Calvin Rankin's Papers, No 3717, Southern Historical Collection, the North Carolina Library, Chapel Hill NC (the original is in the handwriting of William Donnell (born 3 May 1796) son of Andrew Donnell, the 7th child of Thomas Donnell & Jane Latham, wrote that Thomas Donnell was born "in 1700, between 10 and 15", came to America and married Jane Latham and sttled in Pennsylvania.
You wrote that your Robert Donnell was born about 1728 in Ireland; that his daughter Elizabeth married the Robert Donnell who was the son of Thomas Donnell and Jane Latham; that this Elizabeth Donnell had a brother Daniel Donnell, Sr.
PLEASE send me your sources! I have tried for many years to learn more about Thomas Donnell's ancestry...I've even been to northern Ireland looking for something, to no avail.
In "Portrait and Biographical Record of Montgomery and Bond Counties, Illinois (Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1892), page 221, in a biographical sketch of Joseph M. Donnell: "...a retired farmer and prominent citizen of Greenville, was born in Guilford County, N.C., June 16, 1816...The great grandfather of our subject, Thomas Donnell, was a native of the Emerald Isle...and in 1731...came to America WITH SEVEN BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS..." This is fine, but in his next sentence he writes "they settled near Philadelphia, Pa, where Thomas Donnell spent the remainder of his life, dying at a ripe old age". Of course we know Thomas Donnell died in Guilford Co NC in 1795.
So, whether Thomas came to America with 7 brothers and 3 sisters is "suspect" as Mr. Joseph M. Donnell didn't know that Thomas died in Guilford Co NC, and he, Joseph M., was born in Guilford Co NC.
However...I repeat, I will so appreciate your sharing your sources about Daniel Sr., his sister Elizabeth who married Robert Donnell the son of Thomas and Jane, and Elizabeth's father Robert who was born about 1728 in Ireland...
I oveerlooked telling you that Thomas Donnell & Jane Latham's 8th child, George, was my ancestor. He was born 4 July 1759 in what was Rowan Co NC (later Guilford Co) and died 10 March 1839 in Wilson Co TN. I am descended from his 2nd wife, Amelia (Williams) Shanks.
