I can't speak for MA records but I know in ME, the name changes are in their Court records. Years ago the ME name changes were on line. I don't know if they still are or not.
But the records were simple...they stated the person's or families (sometimes entire families changed their names), as it was and then it showed what they changed it to, usually giving a date and court document number.

As I have tried to research my own Donnell family name which was originally shown on the records as DONALD, I have not been able to determine with any accuracy or conclusive evidence just what their name was Originally, so I now stick with DONALD.
Good Luck to you and I hope you find your family name easier than I am able to.
