Many of the Donnell's came from Ireland and their true name was Donnell. Those in Pennsylvania joined Presby. or similar non-Catholic churches upon their arrival.
Name "changes" also occur when census takers write down what they hear or during immigration. Those with a link to Ellis Island should use the Soundex to find their ancestors!
