Just to add this as a sidebar to my previous posting.
Given Henry DUNWELL's last name and the confusion with some of our Scottish DONNELL's, I think some of the confusion probably came from those recording the earliest records in New England at the time.
It has been shown that our Donald name has been spelled as Donnild, Dunnild, Donnell, DUnnell, Dunnel etc.
When our Thomas DONALD came to York Co., ME there are early records of them having spelled these names as DUnnel and variants. Given that Henry's last name was DUNWELL, I think anyone can see where the confusions probably began.
Dunwell Dunnell, someone probably misread the name or the spelling from the old handwritings and that just started the ball rolling from there.
When the Donald name is spoken in heavy Scot accent it comes out sounding exactly like DUNNELL or DONAL/Donnell.
The "d" on the end is near silent. This again lends support and some evidence as to how our name could have been confused over the generations.
Okay, this has no doubt already been mentioned on this site before.
Hope this may help for those who could be newcomers to the world of genealogy though and researching the lines of York and Lincoln Co., Maine etc.
