Thomas, Ada & George Donovan Ingonish CB

I am a descendant of Jeremiah Donovan (1785) who came from Ireland to Ingonish, NS in the early 1800s. I've had good luck in tracing my family, but I've come across a couple of mysteries I hope someone can help me solve.
My great-grandparents were Thomas Donovan (1858-1902)and Ada Shepard (1875-1902). Thomas died in January 1902 and Ada died two months later. Does anyone know how they died? There isn't much info available - the province of NS had stopped keeping Vital Statistics and resumed in 1908. They left four children,Thomas (who was killed in WWI);George, my grandfather;Joseph and Annie Celeste. I can't find where these children went after their parents' deaths.
The next record I have of my grandfather is his application to join the army in WWI. He came back badly injured and married my grandmother, Ellen O'Brien, in April 1918. They had three daughters, Ida (1919-1962) Margaret (1921-1993) and my mother, Rita Celine, who is now 87. George disappeared when my mother was a pre-schooler. My grandmother (who died in her 40s)never spoke of him. To this day my mother would love to know what became of her father. Could he have returned to Cape Breton?? Any info would be appreciated.
