I don't think you are as confused as you think you might be. My files indicate a Samuel Fletcher Doolen born in IL in 1843. He is the son of Daniel James Doolen and Ginsey (or Jincy)Ann Whiteside. Daniel James Doolen is the son of Jesse Doolen and Rachel Bone. The point on which there may be some confusion is that I have another Samuel Fletcher Doolen, born in 1847 in IL, the son of Alfred Murray (or some similar spelling) Doolen and Mary Ann Ginger. I also have that he died in Decatur, IL, but I don't know when. I don't have anything about a Samuel F. Doolen of 1887.
