The following is some information I found on Andrew Doppel Sr.:
Source: Ozaukee Country Historical Society, 1880 Ozaukee County Census: Andrew Doppel, age 49, was a farmer, came from Bavaria, married to Ana Maria, age 46, who was keeping house, and had a son named George, age 24, Philip, age 17, William, age 12, and a daughter, Mary age 10 (all born in Wisconsin) living at home.
Source: 1880 Federal Census, Ozaukee County, Saukville, Wisconsin. Film 1255441, National Archives Film T9-1441, Page 455B. Same as above information.
Source: Archdiocese of Milwaukee: Andrew Doppel died on February 1, 1899 and was buried on February 4, 1899. Place of birth: Germany. Age 68 years. Cause of death: Apoplexy. Buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Saukville, Wis. Rev. Henry Woris
From Newspaper (probably the Cedarburg News February 1899) provided by Ozaukee County Historical Society (see document) under Saukville section:
"Andrew Doppel one of the oldest settlers of this town, died at his home on Friday last and was buried on Sunday last in the Catholic cemetery. Deceased was an honest, industrious man, a kind neighbor, and loving, dutiful husband and father. The funeral was largely attended."
I do not know which port Andrew entered the United States, but since he applied for citizenship in Erie County, New York, in 1852, he may have come via the St. Lawrence Seaway and arrived at Port Owego, New York.
I have additional information on the Doppel families, Conrad family, and Jushka family. I might even have met your husband when he was just a boy. If you wish to contact me directly, my email address is: firstname.lastname@example.org
