The Doremus came from Reims so some of my husband's family did research on this.. They were huguenots and left France for Holland..during the persecution of the protestants. It is interesting that lots of Doremus, in this country , are calvinists, or " dutch reformed"
So we find "de Reims" and D'oramus" and also Dooremus. However, there are in Holland many families by the mane Doremus.
The community from which the family came to this country was that of Middleburg, chief city of the province of Zeeland, (Southern part of Holland).
In 1709, Cornelis had acquired a large part of land in what is now Paterson, NJ . In1722 he joined with 7 others in securing 2800 acresin the neighborhood of th epresent Cedar Grove. A part of the family soon spread to Doremus and over into Morris county.
