Hi Norman,

Yes, I'm talking about that man. I have him as John W. (Martain) Doremus. My mother always stressed that his middle name was Martain and that his daughter Lydia's last child was named Martian after him. He is a descendant of a long line of Doremus's who were a fairly prominent family in the New Jersey area. If you are interested in more information about that I'll refer you to look for a book in library or historical society archives.

I have a lot of information on John's family, and contacts for descendants of two of his sons. I am directly descended from John's daughter Lydia -- and her second husband, Jonas Hackett.

Lydia had been previously married to Jesse Hite and he died of dysentery shortly after he returned from the Civil War. They had 5 children of which two survived to adulthood and had children. I have contact with a descendant of one of those children.

Also of interest -- at least to me -- is that Jonas Hackett had been married to Lydia Doremus's younger sister Harriet first -- and she died in childbirth leaving him a baby who was raised by him and later Lydia, her aunt, and Jonas, her father, married and she was part of that family.

Where do you fit into the family?

I'm very happy to share information with you. And we are cousins. It seems that anyone with a Doremus name or in their family is related.

Nice to hear from you. I'll wait for your reply...and if you are comfortable we may want to send direct emails so we don't clog up the message boards.
