Dorion GenForum Researchers:
I was unsuccessful in my attempt to reach Shawn Dorion privately at the last e-mail address which was posted for him (firstname.lastname@example.org)so I decided to post it here even though it is a little long. Shawn's mail was returned as "invalid address". If anyone has a new e-mail address for him, please let me now. I would welcome a response from Shawn or any Dorion researchers who might have an interest in Dr. Gilroy and Nathalie Dorion. Thanks.
I found your correspondence on the Dorion GenForum site and wondered if you could shed any light on my search for Nathalie Dorion and Dr. John P. Gilroy.
For sometime, I have been searching for information concerning my great great grandfather, Dr. John Patrick Gilroy of Charles County, Maryland, USA (b. abt. 1797 in Ireland – d. October 1861 in Washington, DC, USA). The Gilroy family has not been able to trace his family further back than he and his wife Henrietta (Henney) Doyle Gilroy (b. Charles County, MD, USA, abt 1814 – d. aft. 1860).
Our search led us to articles from the Washington, DC, National Intelligencer Newspaper concerning Dr. Gilroy and Nathalie Dorion of Quebec, Canada. In the 1827 newspapers he denies being married to Nathalie Dorion and states she is wrongfully claiming to be his wife. The newspapers also refer to articles placed in the Quebec Gazette and the Quebec Mercury Newspapers announcing the marriage.
I contacted Leonard Dorion of Quebec, Canada, who is a long time researcher of the Dorion family, and he advised that Dr. Gilroy and Nathalie Dorion (b. abt. 1805 – d. 1843), daughter of Pierre Dorion and Genevieve (Jane) Clark, were indeed married and that a copy of their marriage license is on file at the National Archives in Quebec City, Canada. He states that Dr. Gilroy and Nathalie Dorion were married January 10, 1822, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Quebec City.
I sent Leonard a great deal of information on Dr. Gilroy and he seemed very interested, but I did not hear from him again. I was particularly interested in knowing whether Dr. Gilroy and Nathalie had any children. In the meantime one of my first cousins who lives in Maryland found a notation on an internet site which indicated that Leonard has passed away in 2003.
I also contacted Michel Martineau at the National Archives in Quebec City by e-mail concerning the possibility of purchasing a copy of the marriage certificate, but I have had no response to my inquiry. I’m not sure I contacted the right person, as it was an e-mail address I found on the web site for the National Archives. It was the only Archives location which was in Quebec City. All of this was last fall.
When I saw your post on the Dorion site, I decided to renew my efforts to find out more about the Gilroy/Dorion relationship. You seemed very knowledgeable about the Dorion family. The Washington Intelligencer Newspaper finally issued a statement that they would no longer post any further notes from Nathalie or Dr. Gilroy. They seemed very angry with one another, and she says that she was indeed married to him but wishes she was not because he is so despicable. They go on and on.
Dr. Gilroy was last found in the 1860 Census in Washington, DC, listed as a physician. He was 63 years old. He died in October of 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War. The family feels he may have returned to DC to help with the medical needs of the influx of Union troops there. We cannot locate his burial site (family legend says he was buried at Congressional Cemetery) and his body was not returned to Southern Maryland. Southern Maryland was, at the time, very sympathetic to the Confederate cause. His wife, Henrietta, was shown on the 1860 Census in the Hilltop District of Charles County, Maryland, on their tobacco plantation, with their children.
Any help you can offer will be much appreciated. If you know of a contact at the Archives, please send me a name and address (snail mail or e-mail).
Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing from you. I would be happy to share my research with you if you are interested.
