Susan,
Congratulations on having the new info.I wish I could say for certain who your Frank belongs too.The fact that he gave his father as Othello is the problem.I have in my files a James H. Dorris, son of Kinchen C. Dorris & Polly Smith.Kinchen is the half nephew of my ancestor James S. Dorris who with his first wife named his children names from Shakespear. It seems odd that that naming pattern would dribble down to a half great great nephew but stranger things have happened, I suppose.Kinchen was in the same area as the Shakespearian named Dorris' children so maybe they just liked the name or were close friends as well as cousins.
Saying all of this I still have a puzzle.I've found a family that matches yours except for the name Othello.I'm wondering if the father was, indeed, Othello but didn't use that name. The one that fits did name a son Othello. If the census records are right this son, Othello, is too young to be your Frank's father but he does has a brother named Frank and one named Oscar.I'll include all I have to help you.I've spent the morning when I could looking at census records trying to find something more to no avail.
Also, the DC has Frank's birth date in 1870.This Frank I'm sending (below)doesn't match to the 1870 birth but is a few years earlier. Census records can sometimes be misleading. If your DC gives a location for your Frank's birth place please let me know and I'll try the census records index. The only other thing is that it is possible that the Census index from Anc.com isn't totally accurate.I just don't have the time to do an individual search but if you know what state he was born, that would be my next suggestion for you....check the 1880 in the state where he was born...a tremendous job but one I have done in the past before indexes.
Descendants of James H. Dorris
1 James H. Dorris b: 1831 in Kentucky or Missouri or Louisiana (each census is different and then Oscar in the 1910 said AR.) d: Aft. 1873 in possibly Grayson County, Texas
.. +Jane b: 1835 in Tennessee m: Bef. 1854 d: (in Denison, Grayson County, Texas 1880 census..not certain of place of death.)
2 Othello Dorris b: 1855 in Arkansas
2 Josephine Dorris b: 1857 in Arkansas
2 Volney P. Dorris b: 1859 in Arkansas
.... +Ella b: 1863 in Missouri
2 Maggie Dorris b: 1862 in Arkansas
2 Frank Dorris b: 1867 in Arkansas
2 Oscar Dorris b: 1873 in Texas
I found this family first in AR census and then found Jane as an apparent widow in Grayson Co., TX in 1880.I am sure the same because of the son named Volney P. listed in the AR & TX census. He disappears after 1880 as do all of them but Oscar reappears in the 1910 Grayson Co., TX census.I'm curious why your Frank ended up in IL where he died.It makes me think I'm totally in the wrong camp.I checked from 1880 through 1930 for Frank and didn't find anyone even remotely like him.Did he use another name?Jane, his mother, disappears after 1880.Did she remarry?
The next thing I would suggest is to try to get Oscar R.'s death certificate....in Texas??? That would see if he and Frank had the names the same for their parents.
I searched every census for Othello using soundex, etc and didn't find one other than the one above born in 1855.After 1860 I never found another Othello.Perhaps they decided to use their other given name? There was an Othello E. also in AR son of my James S. of the original Shakespearian names. He disappears after 1860. If he had a son named Othello the census missed it.
Sorry this isn't a possitive connection. If you happen to think this is your family, I can take you back to William from Ireland.
Please send me the place where Frank's Othello died. Also, could Othello have been a nickname?
Ann
