Traced my direct male line back to 16th century. Variously spelt Dowse and Dows. John Dowse, a sawyer, born 1587, married Elizabeth, son Isaac born 1610, then several generations with the name of Isaac through to my grandfather William born 1860 at Bottom House, Abbots Langley, married Caroline in 1889 at Dover, four sons including my father Walter. 17-19th century records from Hertfordshire County Archivist, Count Hall, Hertford SG13 8DE. Also from Church of England in Abbots Langley and Kings Langley (G H Towell at 57 Hempstead Road in KL very helpful). But it's over 20 years since I made my searches so much may have changed. Several tombstones and Dows/Douse on War Memorials. Good wishes to all Douses everywhere

Mike Douse of that ilk
