I'm seeking any information on Augustus T. Dowd (1823-1893). He was born in Connecticut and is buried at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, California. The 1880 US Federal Census places him at District 239, Township 3, San Mateo, unmarried, aged 57, working as a "road overseer" and living in a house with five other men (Charles Moore, 45; Charles D. Green, 49; Joseph Roberts, 37; John Shey, 36; Wialliam Cebolt, 26).

He is famous for being the "Effective Discoverer of the Calaveras Big Trees", as it says on his grave. This famous moment occurred in 1852 and is widely written about, but nothing much is known about what happened to Augustus T. Dowd after this event.

Any information on his family history, or any other relevant information, would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
