Another addendum to my original query re Martin Dowd. Apparently, his father was Michael Dowd and his mother's birth name was Ellen Golden. As Martin was also married to a Golden, this presents an additional minor mystery. So far, I have no specific place names for Ireland origins. Martin's death certificate states his birth as 1852 and claims that he emigrated as an infant.
