Thanks to the Dowdell habit of intermarrying, I am directly descended from several of her close kin and have lots of stuff collected on her. She's my gggreat aunt. About a mile from my house is her home in the 1850s, Sunny Slope, which is still standing. My gggrandfather officiated at her daughter's wedding. One of her thirteen children was William James Samford, governor of Alabama, 1900-1901 (died in office), for whom Auburn's signature building, Samford Hall is named. I know some of her direct Samford descendants now living, and more. Please email me back with your phone number and we can talk. I'm compiling an extensive Dowdell family history/genealogy right now which goes back to her grandfather James Dowdell I (and we can trace from him some twenty generations or more to Walter of Duvedale, 1318) of Virginia, later Kentucky. But to answer your immediate questions:

Her parents:

2. Lewis Jefferson Dowdell was born July 31, 1785, Spotsylvania Co., VA, and married Elizabeth “Betsy” Clay Farley on February 25, 1818, in the home of Matthew Farley (relation unknown), Putnam, Co., GA (according to Georgia Marriage Records to 1850). Lewis died of exhaustion after fighting a fire on his farm Mulberry on February 17, 1848, Harris Co., GA, and was buried next to his wife in Putnam Co., GA. She was born September 3, 1800, Hamilton, GA (daughter of Arthur Farley and Ann Berry Tinsley); she died at Mulberry, Harris Co., GA, on October 22, 1826; buried Jasper Co., GA. Lewis and Elizabeth had five children, four of whom lived to maturity:
